Ballet Faux Pas: Common Mistakes Adult Dancers Make (We've All Been There!)

Updated: Jun 26

Let’s face it: ballet comes with a learning curve — and not just for technique. As adult dancers, we often step into the studio unsure of the "rules" that everyone else is operating under. In this post, we're breaking down those little faux pas that can trip us up in class (often without us even realizing it).

Why Etiquette Matters

The ballet classroom is a shared experience built on mutual respect for the teacher, the space, and each other. When we're all on the same page, class flows more smoothly and is a comfortable environment for everyone.

The Most Common Ballet Faux Pas

Here are some common faux pas adult dancers commit without even realizing it's a misstep:

Studio Etiquette Faux Pas:

  • Correcting other students (can come across as patronizing or judgmental — best left to teachers!)

  • Standing too close to your classmates at the barre (make sure you're at least kicking-distance apart!)

  • Bringing water bottles into the center portion of class (keep it along the wall or outside the studio door)

  • Standing front-and-center as a newcomer (pro tip: the middle is great for ensuring you have people to watch — no matter which direction you're facing — and you're less likely to be taking a "regulars" spot)

Fashion Fax Pas:

  • Wearing footed black tights with pink shoes (visually cuts your line — opt for stirrup tights or footless instead!)

  • Skipping tights altogether (opt for nude tones or layers — like bike shorts — that support movement and modesty)

  • Wearing sheer leotards or yoga pants (always double-check under good lighting before you wear it to class — no one paid for a full show) 😬

Technology Faux Pas:

  • Phones should stay silent and tucked away

  • Always ask before filming!

If You Commit a Faux Pas... (And We All Have)

Here’s the good news: every dancer has done something on this list. So what's the best way to recover?

  • Acknowledge it, adjust, and keep showing up!

  • Watch the seasoned dancers in your class, ask questions, and refer to your studio’s policies when in doubt.

Final Thoughts

With a little awareness, humility, and humor, you’ll not only avoid the most common faux pas, you’ll help create a more comfortable space for everyone. 🩰 Want to hear the full conversation on this topic?Listen to the episode below!
