Recover Faster: The Power of Compression for Ballet Dancers

As adult ballet dancers, we know the toll that classes and practice sessions take on our bodies. After dancing, muscle soreness, fatigue, and swelling can affect the rest of our day, or even our next class. But here's the good news: compression is a game-changer for recovery, and it's so easy to implement into your routine.
Why It Works
Compression recovery methods activate the body’s natural healing process by improving circulation, which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to tired muscles while clearing out waste products like lactic acid. Doing this will, in most cases, noticeably reduce your soreness and recovery time after dancing.
Here are two of my favorite compression methods as a fellow adult dancer trying to keep my body healthy, happy and ready for my next class...

1. Compression Socks & Legwarmers:
Compression socks and legwarmers are designed to provide graduated pressure to your legs and feet, which helps improve circulation. They gently squeeze to encourage blood flow, helping to reduce swelling and accelerate muscle recovery. Compression socks can even be great to wear while dancing because they provide support in key areas like the arch, ankle, and calf. I have been wearing Apollo for about two years now and have recently become an ambassador because I love their products so much. The Joule model is my personal favorite for pointe work and these legwarmers have been a game changer for reducing calf soreness!
2. Air Compression Boots:
If you want to take your recovery to the next level, air compression boots are a must-try. These boots use dynamic air pressure to compress and release sections of your legs, mimicking the effects of a deep tissue massage. By compressing different areas of the legs, they promote lymphatic drainage, flush out metabolic waste, and reduce muscle soreness and tightness. Many dancers swear by these boots' effectiveness (including myself) - especially after long dance days, like when attending summer intensive. I own this pair and have been super happy with them. The reduction in soreness the next day is amazing and they come with me to every intensive!
For adult ballet dancers, recovery is just as important as practice. Whether it’s the gradual pressure of compression socks or the dynamic pressure of compression boots, both options can offer significant relief so you can get back to class feeling refreshed and ready to move. And if you decide to incorporate compression methods into your post-dance routine (or do already) let me know what you think!
Happy dancing! 😄
