5 Foot Care Tips for Adult Ballet Dancers

Updated: Jun 26

As dancers, our feet are basically the MVP's of our bodies... They do A LOT for us. So whether you’re logging hours at the barre or venturing onto pointe, taking care of your feet isn’t just a luxury -- it’s a necessity. As I've navigated my own chronic fatigue and injury, I've found some methods that I swear by. Here are five of my favorite foot care tips to leave your tootsies refreshed and ready for more dancing...

ree

1. Stand on an acupressure mat

Think of this as a mini massage for your tired soles. Standing on an acupressure mat stimulates circulation, helps relieve tension, and can even ease foot fatigue. Just a few minutes a day can refresh the fascia and tiny muscles we tend to ignore Regular use can even help with plantar fasciitis! This one from Amazon is amazing an you get two mats for only $12. (I love to stand on mine while I brush my teeth.)

2. Wear toe separators when you’re relaxing

After jamming your toes into pointe shoes, those babies need room to breathe! Toe separators help realign your toes, improve flexibility, and reduce the cramping & stiffness that can come after long stretches of dancing. I love to wear this pair when I'm watching TV (usually Gilmore Girls, because I'm convinced that show has healing powers).

Bonus tip: Store them in the refrigerator and they'll feel even more amazing to put on!

3. Slip on a pair of compression socks

If you’ve never tried compression socks, prepare to fall in love. They're truly doing the Lord's work as they help reduce swelling, speed up muscle recovery, and improve blood flow. Apolla even makes dancer-specific styles that support tired feet & ankles without compromising mobility or aesthetics. (I love this brand so much that I became an ambassador... Seriously, their products are amazing.)

4. Use toe spacers in your slippers and pointe shoes

Wearing toe spacers while dancing helps to maintain proper toe alignment (because no thanks, bunions) and reduce the friction that leads to blisters and corns. This is my favorite pair to place between my big toe and second toe, and I wear them in both my slippers and pointe shoes. Wearing them completely stopped the bunion pain I'd started to experience every time I danced -- like little silicone angels. ◡̈

5. Cold plunge your feet (or your whole body!)

Yes, it’s unpleasant, but hear me out... Cold plunging reduces inflammation, soothes sore muscles, and boosts circulation. Even a 60 second dunk of your feet in an ice bucket after class can work WONDERS. (Brave enough for a full plunge? Go for it -- you won't believe how much it speeds up your recovery time and reduces soreness.)

Taking care of your feet isn’t just about comfort -- it’s about performance, longevity, and injury prevention. When your feet feel strong, supported, and pain-free, you’re able to dance more confidently, and really enjoy your time in the studio. So go ahead treat your feet like the queens that they are -- they deserve it. ◡̈
